THE WINNERYS

DAILY URBAN TIMES

RAINBOW QUARTZ

Is it possible to base an entire pop music career on The Beatles’ “And Your Bird Can Sing? With the second album from Madrid’s The Winnerys, one might be persuaded to answer yes. Released by Rainbow Quartz, perhaps the last bastion of anachronistic perfection in a record label, Daily Urban Times is a stellar album from start to finish—15 songs and 60 minutes of everything discerning listeners love about ‘60s pop. Guitars jangle, melodies soar, and harmonies ring. Sure, more recent musical references can be spotted—XTC and Dear 23-era Posies to name a couple—but The Winnerys don’t pretend to be anything but what they are - a band of accomplished retro popsmiths. Although the band seldom mines any new territory, the bottom line is that one would be hard pressed to find tunes more infectious.
