STEVE KILBEY (THE CHURCH)

What is your first musical memory?
My first musical memory is listening to "Only the Lonely" by Frank Sinatra. My mum and dad owned it along with about two other records. I got quite familiar with it and it gave me a lifelong penchant for sad songs.

What was the first album you owned?
The first album I owned was It’s 2 Easy by the Easybeats in 1965.

Were you not a musician, what would your profession be?
If not a musician I had hoped to study Latin and Greek.

What song do you wish you had written?
I wish I wrote a lotta songs, I can tell ya, but I guess “Strawberry Fields would have been nice. It seems to have no antecedents whatsoever, like it fell outta the air fully formed.

What was the first concert you attended?
My first concert was a package tour at the Albert Hall in Canberra, maybe 1965. There were 4 huge Australian bands. When the drummers threw their sticks into the audience girls would go crazy trying to retrieve them, scratching and clawing; I noted this all with much interest that there was something going on here.

Who would be in your ultimate three-band, live performance lineup, dead or alive?
A 3-piece band huh? Well I guess Moony on drums, Peter Hook on bass and Mick Ronson on guitar.

What instrument would you like to play, that you currently cannot?
An instrument I wish I could play is the drums. I’m hopeless. Maybe its better that way....

With whom would you like to collaborate?
Bill Nelson, Brian Eno, Grant McLennan.

Which one of your songs would you put in a time capsule?
If I had to put a song in a capsule I guess it’d have to be “Under the Milky (bloody) Way because then you’d know exactly how 1988 felt.

What album can you not live without?
I cannot, I refuse to live without T. Rex by T. Rex. It came out in 1970, no singles but it’s my constant delight.

Who was your first pop star romantic crush/fantasy?
My first pop star crush was on Marc Bolan...I worshipped him for a couple of years.
